For some, dealing with a concussion can lead to difficulty with anger, irritability, or other emotions. This is in part due to the physical changes within the brain, but can also be caused by having to deal with challenges in your life after a concussion. It’s important to recognize and plan to include strategies that address both factors.
Some examples of difficulty controlling your emotions:
- Difficulty controlling your emotions & keeping your cool
- Feeling overwhelmed by your emotions
- Finding it difficult to ignore minor irritations
- Feeling frustrated
- Saying or doing things in the heat of the moment that you regret later
- Increased arguments with friends or family
Strategies:
- Recognize that some subjects will trigger emotions more easily than others. If you have to talk about something difficult, mentally prepare yourself.
- Use deep breathing to calm yourself in the moment
- When you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, explain that you need a break and walk away
- Deal with your feelings in positive ways; write them down in a journal or talk to a friend
